Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get involved with überculture?
Clicking the “Get Involved” button might be a good start. Otherwise, just send us an email and tell us about yourself.

Can I be a member of überculture even if I’m not a Concordia student?
Yes. In the future, however, we may ask for a small, one-time donation from non-students to reflect the fact that we are currently solely student-funded and run.

I know you guys normally meet on Monday nights, but I have class/work at that time. Can I still help?
Yes. Send us an email letting us know what you’re into, and we’ll hook you up with a project or event at another time where you can help out and meet the team. Also, we’ve started taking minutes at the meetings. If you want to be kept up to date with what goes on at the meetings, just send us an email requesting that we add you to the mailing list.

Why are you guys so darn cool?
Other than “gee shucks, thanks!” we don’t have much of a response, but this is a question we’re asked quite frequently, so we thought we’d include it.

What’s this “Really Really Free Market” thing I keep hearing about?
The idea is something like a normal clothing swap: folks are invited to bring clothes, books, and items they no longer need for exchange with other students. There’s no requirement to bring anything or take anything in order to participate, but we’ve found that people love doing both.

We love running this project for its ability to build community, promote sustainability, and create a fun, stigma-free environment for students in need and those facing poverty. More than that, it’s totally radical political action even your grandma can get behind. Read about it in the Link, here.

Why do you guys have such a big problem with corporations and stuff?
Well, it’s complicated. For people who are just starting to think critically about consumption, culture, and alternative economic models, we recommend watching a documentary called The Corporation (available free here).

How are you funded? Can I donate?
We’re a student group at Concordia University. We receive a small budget from the Concordia Student Union (CSU) and an office space to work in. Students pay a fee-levy to support all CSU Clubs and student groups (that fee funds everything from the Dodgeball League to Campus for Christ) and we get a teeny fraction of that money in order to operate. We are not a separate fee-levy group, and we’re not incorporated, so if you’d really like to donate to the cause (even if it’s just $5!) you’ll have to contact us directly, unfortunately.

I’m involved with a similar organization and we want to collaborate!
We’d love to work with you! However, if you need help with funding, we don’t have much of it. If you want help from like-minded folks with a vast skill set and a sense of adventure though, we’re in.

I’m a member of the media and want to interview someone from your group.
Then don’t bother trying to phone us: that office line is really unreliable and you won’t get a response for weeks. Instead, send an email to uberculture AT csu DOT qc DOT ca: it’s checked daily and there’s always a member of our collective happy to talk.

  1. Just wondering if you have a forum to discuss specific topics rather than just these comment boards. I’m a Concordia Alum ’10

    • Unfortunately we don’t have forums for discussion, but anyone who’s interested in discussing anything with us in person is invited to come to our meetings!
We have two every week — a formal meeting every Monday at 5:30pm at the GSA lounge (2030 Mackay), and on Thursdays, people drop by to chat or help out throughout the day at P-105 in 2020 Mackay.
If those times don’t fit your schedule, you can send us an e-mail, or see if any of our office hours throughout the week are better for you (they can be found on our Get Involved page
